First memory: My parents brought me to a frozen lake to take me ice-skating. I was terrified to step onto the ice because I thought I would sink into the freezing water. In frustration, my mother picked me up and carried me out onto the ice. I stood there petrified, afraid to move. I didn’t understand why they were laughing at me when I was so afraid.
Best memory: Waking up in Tobago Cays in the middle of a squall. We all woke up one by one and meandered on the deck in the rain and watched the anchor line pull tight as the boat swung around. As the wind died down someone brought up a bottle of wine, and we passed it around drenched and wild-eyed. We toasted to forsaking any other quality of existence than what we had at that moment.
First traumatic event: When we lived in Ohio and I was in first grade, my school had a day when we were supposed to go to work with one of my parents to see what their daily life was like. My father worked at a nuclear power plant and was very excited about taking me, proud of his responsibilities. He had his hard hat ready and brought one for me to wear as well. On the way , we stopped at a gas station . My father went inside to pay for the gas. I could see the station owner and my father arguing inside. I think they were disputing how much gas he had put in the car. My father started walking back to the car. Suddenly, the station owner came after my dad with a baseball bat. My father made it to the car and the owner started hitting the car with the bat, breaking a side window yelling, "You f---ing Arabs. You’re always trying to rip me off." My dad was shaking as we drove away. He tried to reassure me and apologize for what happened as if he was to blame. We had both lost our enthusiasm for the rest of the day, and we went home early.

The next day, I was supposed to get up in front of the class and tell about my day with my father. When my turn came, I got up in front of the class and just stood there, unable to say anything. Finally, I sat down.
