First memory: As soon as I could talk, my mother asked me why I was mad when I was born. She explained that I didn’t eat or open my eyes for three days after birth. Upon searching my memory, I couldn’t remember being born, or mad. Her question was so sincere, and she wanted to know the answer so badly that I made one up. I told her I was mad because when I was in her womb, it was warm and comfortable, and after I was born, it was cold. This answer seemed to satisfy her.
Best memory: I was on Whidbey Island, standing on a high bluff, looking out over Holmes Harbor. It was warm, the wind was blowing through my hair and I was totally happy. I was so happy, I wondered why everyone wasn’t happy all the time.
First traumatic event: When I was a little boy, I found a cigarette lighter on the seat of our family car. With a girl friend, I took the lighter and went to our family’s covered wagon in the front yard. First I tried burning one of the metal hoops that held the canvas up. It didn’t burn. Then I tried catching the wood on fire that made up the wagon. It didn’t burn. Finally, I held the lighter to the canvas. It burst into flames immediately. My girl friend and I tried to put it out by picking up handfuls of dirt and throwing it on the fire. That didn’t work. Within seconds, my mother came tearing out of the house screaming at us to get away from the wagon. She got the garden hose and put the fire out. The family wagon was destroyed and I got a terrible licking.
